“My Part Of Town,” Poetry From Students At Bonham Academy In the San Antonio Independent School District
Gemini Ink’s Writers in Communities program facilitated a 12-week after-school creative writing workshop in the Spring of 2011 for fifteen 4th and 5th graders at Bonham Academy. Poet Trey Moore was the writer-in-residence that worked with students to focus on their homes, streets, families, histories, and dreams for the future. The group wrote poems and short narratives that not only resulted in enhanced language dexterity and critical thinking, but also engaged students, their families, and communities in a greater awareness of and rapport with their surroundings.
At the close of the residency, each student received a colorful printed broadside (literary poster) featuring her/his writing and illustrated by professional artist Carolina Flores. The broadsides are displayed by neighborhood businesses and merchants throughout the King William and Art Deco districts and will be on view through July 31, 2011.
This project was generously funded by the King William Association.
