The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference
Make plans for The Mayborn Conference this summer! You’ll be inspired by this gathering of writers at the podium and sitting next to you. The Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism at the University of North Texas wants you to register for: A Way Out of the Wilderness A Weekend of Workshops, Lectures and Panel Discussions. Major cash prizes and a publishing contract will be awarded in the writing contest. Keynote speakers are: Mary Karr, Mark Bowden and Gary Smith.

Glimmer Train – Very Short Fiction Award
Guidelines for the Very Short Fiction Award category:
To make a submission: Please send your work via our Glimmer Train’s new online submission page.
Dates: The category will be open to submissions for one full month, from the first day through midnight (Pacific time) of the last day of the month. Results will be posted at www.glimmertrain.org.
- January. Results will be posted on March 31.
- July. Results will be posted on September 30.
Reading fee: $15 per story
Prizes:
- 1st place wins $1,200, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, and 20 copies of that issue.
- 2nd-place: $500
- 3rd-place:$300
GLIMMER TRAIN – SHORT STORY AWARD FOR NEW WRITERS
Deadline: August 31
Prizes:
1st place wins $1,200, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, and 20 copies.
2nd-place: $500 and possible publication.
3rd-place: $300 and possible publication.
Other considerations:
Open only to writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. (Entries, of course, must not have appeared in any print publication.)
Please, no longer than 12,000 words. Any shorter lengths are welcome.
Reading fee is $15 per story.
Results post on October 31. Winning story will be published in Issue 81.
2011 EMERGING VOICES APPLICATION
About the Emerging Voices Rosenthal Fellowship Program:
Emerging Voices is a literary fellowship program that aims to provide new writers, who lack access, with the tools they will need to launch a professional writing career. Over the course of the year, each Emerging Voices fellow participates in: a professional mentorship; hosted Q & A evenings with prominent local authors; a series of Master classes focused on genre; and two public readings. The fellowship includes a $1,000 stipend.
Participants need not be published, but the program is directed toward poets and writers of fiction and creative nonfiction with clear ideas of what they hope to accomplish through their writing. There are no age restrictions.
A Successful EV Application will include:
- Completed EV Application
- Summary Sheet from your 2009 federal tax return
- Professional CV that details your work experience, education and publications credits.
- Short Answer Section Responses
- Two letters of recommendation written by people who are familiar with your writing and can comment on your commitment to large projects. Letters from relatives will not be accepted.
- Writing Sample should include up to 20 pages of fiction or creative nonfiction or 10 pages of poetry. Sample should be typed and double-spaced. Please indicate if/how the work in your sample is relevant to the project you plan to propose as an EV fellow.
- $10 application fee Please address checks and/or money orders to PEN USA. No cash.
- Five (5) copies of your application packet
Only completed applications will be reviewed. Materials are not returned. Please make copies for your records.

20th Annual Jeffrey E. Smith: Editors’ Prize – October 1, 2010 deadline
The Missouri Review is now accepting submissions for the 20th Annual Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize competition. In addition to the the $15,000 awarded to the first place winners, three finalists in each category receive cash awards and are considered for publication. Voices de la Luna: a quarterly poetry and arts magazine (Volume 2, Number 4) is pleased to announce the publication of the 15 June 2010 issue in four formats: webpage, digital reader, eMagazine, and hardcopy. The magazine features “Questions for Sandra Cisneros” and an article regarding “Texas Board of Education & Thomas Jefferson.”
phati’tude Literary Magazine offers readers a wide collection of works that consist of poetry, prose, short stories, articles, interviews and essays, along with literary criticism, book reviews and biographical profiles by established and emerging artists, poets and writers with an emphasis on writers of Native American, African, Hispanic/Latino and Asian descent. Published quarterly on POD and Amazon Kindle. Deadline for debut issue has passed, but phati’tude accepts submissions year-round and are conscientious about responding to submissions in a timely manner. Brave Hearts, a quarterly magazine, seeks short manuscripts (up to 900 words), photographs, prayers and related material on special inspirational subjects for each issue.
