“Neighborhood Odes”

In the 2010-2011 school year, The Neighborhood Odes project served some 120 fourth- and fifth-graders at Cleto Rodriguez Elementary, Collins Garden Elementary, Inez Foster Elementary, and Kate Schenck Elementary. Writers-in-residence Nicole Provencher, Trey Moore, D. Ellis Phelps, and artist-in-residence Robert Poschmann worked with students to create an anthology of student writing and a collection of (12 x 18) literary broadsides that are displayed at neighborhood locations around each school. The broadsides are on view through June 30, 2011.
Of the workshops, participants wrote:






I feel I can write just about anything. — 4th grader
I feel filled with joy. — 4th grader
I learned how to revise a poem using power words. — 5th grader
I learned how not to be shy when I talk in front of a class. — 5th grader
I have never experienced such positive attitudes from children in response to any “writing” project. The kids thoroughly enjoyed it. — teacher
