“Writing for Young Voices”

Help us celebrate the power of creative writing in young lives! This year we spotlight our Writers in Communities (WIC) program and two authors whose work centers on the experience of young writers.

October 24, 2019 | The Pearl Stable | 6-9pm

Help us celebrate the power of creative writing in young lives! This year we spotlight our Writers in Communities (WIC) program and Texas Poet Laureate, Carrie Fountain, whose award-winning poetry and writing for youth bridges genres and centers the experiences of young readers.

Carrie Fountain is the author of two books of poetry, including Burn Lake, winner of the 2009 National Poetry Series Award, and is a literary voice to be reckoned with. Her debut YA novel I’m Not Missing, was a Bustle Best YA Book of July 2018.  Her children’s book, The Poem Forest (2020) tells the story of American poet W.S. Merwin and the palm forest he grew from scratch on the island of Maui. As Gemini Ink’s 2015 poetry mentor and a gifted facilitator of workshops, Ms. Fountain has been an active contributor to the San Antonio literary landscape.

Naomi Shihab Nye, just named the U.S Young People’s Poet Laureate, joins Gemini Ink in honoring Carrie as a rising literary star and will conduct a conversation with Ms. Fountain celebrating groundbreaking work happening in youth writing and the importance of empowering the voices of tomorrow.
