Writing Towards Your Authentic Voice: A Summer Prose Workshop with J.R. Helton

Explore strategies for mining the strange and ever-present world of facts and lived experience to create compelling works of fiction or creative non-fiction. In this four-week workshop, participants will have the opportunity to draft and workshop narratives in a variety forms, from narrative nonfiction essays to short stories to the beginnings of a novel or memoir. You will expand your concepts of what a story can be while learning to trust what intrigues you the most.

J. R. Helton has published numerous books about movies, drugs, people, and dogs. He’s the author of Below the Line (2000) on the film business, the memoir Man and Beast (2001), and the novels Drugs (2012) and The Jugheads (2014) from Seven Stories Press in New York.His newest novel is Bad Jobs and Poor Decisions: Dispatches from the Working Class (Liveright/Norton 2018). A writing teacher in Texas, his stories and poems have been featured in Mineshaft Magazine, the Sun, the Missouri Review, among other publications.
