“That’s How I Remember It”: Telling Your Story in Nonfiction

In this class taught by a master craftsman of both memoir and fiction, you’ll learn how to use the crucial narrative elements of fiction in your nonfiction work. The class will examine the different strategies and structures used to write these "memoirs," and look closely at how scene, dialogue, memory, arc, and voice can converge in writing nonfiction for book-length or magazine work.

From urban to suburban to rural landscapes, the location a person writes about can tell a lot about the writer. This poetry workshop centers on the poetry of place. Through a series of writing exercises and dialogue, participants will craft and share work that reexamines the places they’re from or where they currently reside, the writer’s relationships to said places, and how those places have influenced and continue to influence their voice and narratives.
