SUMMARY:Veterans' Writing Collective with Sarah Colby
DESCRIPTION:The Veterans’ Writing Collective (VWC) encourages the art of writing in a workshop environment where participants are offered honest\, positive\, and constructive peer-to-peer and mentor feedback. The workshop is open to all active-duty military\, veterans\, retirees\, and their immediate family members. Writers of all levels working in all genres are welcome. \nThe VWC meets monthly online via Zoom.\nIf you would like an invitation to this class\, send an email to veteranscollective@geminiink.org\n\nSarah Colby was born in northern New Mexico and raised in the Rocky Mountains. She is married to a retired Army Chaplain and is mother to a son in the Navy. Sarah has an MFA in Creative Writing from Sierra Nevada College and an exuberant interest in making the ordinary luminous. Her war-time experiences have motivated her to be a voice for the mostly untold stories of families and loved ones during these years of protracted conflict. She is currently working on a manuscript of poems about her experiences as a military family member.\n \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, August 19\, 2026\, via Zoom for a conversation with Natalia Treviño\, to discuss her new poetry collection\, When You Were Human (Flowersong Press).\n\n\n(Virtual Readings Quarterly @ 7pm CST) \n\n\nRSVP \nThis collection of poetry offers readers multiple entry points to discover the Virgin Mary— as the miraculous mother of God and as the archetypal spiritual mother of all. By examining how Mary is introduced to us through prayer candles\, car air-fresheners\, ritual prayer\, legend\, and high art\, this collection attempts to understand the devotions to Mary that unite people all over the world\, especially in Mexico. Mary has over twenty-two thousand identities world-wide\, but this collection only scratches the surface of those stories focusing on her as the unifying Virgin of Guadalupe\, La Virgen de San Juan de Los Lagos\, and La Virgen de San Juan del Valle\, and these poems meditate on her role as the compassionate\, redeeming Mother of God. In a variety of traditions\, she is united with nature—as the Goddess of Water\, Yemaya\, as Creator Goddess Coatlicue\, as Tonantzin\, as friend\, companion\, as intercessor\, and as the spirit of a fellow human being who has experienced the deepest human suffering\, the loss of her criminalized child to the violence of the state. The poems are political\, reverent\, fresh and varied in style. The collection includes an epilogue in Spanish by Levi Romero and translated by poet Julieta Corpus. The epilogue is a soulful response to the last section of the book\, “Bitter Sorrows\,” which is an adaptation of the Seven Sorrows of Mary prayercycle\, in which Mary’s life story becomes lyric\, prayer\, gift and mystery. \n\nAbout the Author\nBorn in Mexico\, Natalia Treviño graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with both her BA and MA in English. She completed her MFA in creative writing at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Treviño is the author of the chapbook VirginX (Finishing Line Press\, 2018) and the poetry collections When You Were Human (FlowerSong Press\, 2026) and Lavando La Dirty Laundry (Mongrel Empire Press\, 2014).  Treviño is the recipient of several awards\, including the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Award\, the Wendy Barker Creative Writing Award\, the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prize\, the Menada Literary Award from Macedonia\, and the San Antonio Artist Foundation Literary Prize. She is also the winner\, with Octavio Quintanilla\, of the 2024 Ambroggio Prize for co-translating his book Las Horas Imposibles | The Impossible Hours (University of Arizona Press\, 2025).
