Poetry does the same. But what happens when poets borrow elements from film? \nOver five weeks\, we’ll explore the intersections between cinema and poetry\, and imagine the poet as director\, cinematographer\, actor\, screenwriter\, stage designer\, documentarian\, and editor–all at once. Through an eclectic mix of poems\, essays\, and screenplay excerpts\, we’ll uncover how poetry and film share the key elements of discovery\, the transformative tools of language and image\, and the uniting of the speaker’s inner and outer worlds. This class will strengthen your writing skills\, help you to see your work with new eyes\, and deepen your revision process. \nFor intermediate poets (18+) \nWorkshop participants will leave with the following:\n\nAn understanding of how film elements can strengthen poetry\nStrategies for using cinematic elements in poetry\nFresh revision techniques \n\n\nFormer 12-year Regional Director of the Poetry Society of America\, Elena Karina Byrne worked as a Contributing Editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books\, a final judge for PEN’s “Best of the West” award\, one of the final judges for the Kate and Kingsley Tufts Poetry Awards in Poetry from 2016-2018\, and one of three 2018-2019 Georgia Circuit visiting poets. Elena also served as a co-judge for the 2022 international Laurel Prize\, the annual award for the best collection of environmental poetry. \nElena Karina Byrne holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA from Antioch University. She has curated programs for the J. Paul Getty Center\, MOCA\, Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center\, and USC’s Doheny Memorial Library\, among others. She is a private manuscript editor\, freelance lecturer\, longtime Programming Consultant and Poetry Stage Manager for the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books\, and Poetry Programs Director for the historic Ruskin Art Club. A Pushcart Prize and Best American Poetry recipient\, she is the author of five poetry collections\, including If This Makes You Nervous\, No\, Don’t\, Squander\, MASQUE\, and The Flammable Bird. Her work has been supported by Tin House\, the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity\, the Kenyon Review Writers Workshops\, Macondo\, Vermont Studio Center\, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, and the Lambda Literary Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices\, where she received the Emerge Editorial Fellowship and edited Emerge\, the retreat’s anthology. \nHer work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize\, a “notable” selection in The Best American Essays 2024\, and has appeared in Longreads\, The Offing\, Foglifter\, the Ponder Review\, and New Rivers Press as the winner of the American Fiction Award. She writes humorist pieces in “Thursday Letters with Jen” via Substack. Along with writing\, Nguyen is currently the director of postsecondary success at the Stupski Foundation\, a private philanthropic foundation that will spend down its assets and sunset by 2029. Her writing and speaking are premised on how foundations should let go of power and control—in ego\, reporting\, evaluation\, and telling funded organizations what to do—and have appeared in Designing Tomorrow\, Break Fake Rules\, EdSource\, and The Center for Effective Philanthropy. In addition\, with the support of the Stupski Foundation\, she is the author the quarterly column\, “Philanthropy Confidential” – a project of candid and humorous answers to anonymously submitted questions from the philanthropic field. Her professional experiences inspired her book-length critique of the field\, Letter of Inquiry – a project selected to be a part of the 2025 Changemakers Authors Cohort\, which supports the development of books that could have an enduring narrative impact.

Join master poetry teacher Veronica Golos for the final stop on our international poetry tour! \nIn this four-week generative poetry workshop\, we will read\, discuss deeply\, and draw our inspiration from foundational African poets Chris Abani (Nigeria)\, Kwame Dawes (Ghana)\, Tsitsi Jaji (Zimbabwe)\, and Agostinho Nato (Angola). We will explore each poet’s craft tools and apply these techniques to our work. This question is central to the human experience. One way to explore it is by tracing our connections to our family lineage\, our communities\, and the living world around us.  \nIn this workshop\, we will use ancestry as a lens to excavate our sense of connectedness from within. We will imagine belonging as a series of concentric circles: starting with family\, widening to community\, and expanding outward to the Earth as a whole. Each session will focus on one of those circles. Through reflection\, discussion\, and generative writing exercises\, we will transform our discoveries into stories\, essays\, or poems that express this sense of connection. Readings will primarily feature voices from across the United States\, representing various regions\, ethnicities\, and family histories–all of which will model how writers have grappled with the question of belonging.  \nThis workshop is open to writers of all skill levels 18+. \nWorkshop participants will leave with the following: \n\nFamiliarity with American writers who have tapped into an ancestral current to examine and express their deeper sense of belonging\nOne piece of writing per class based on the theme of family\, community\, or Earth\nIdeally\, a deeper sense of how their self is connected to a greater whole\n\n\nDaniel Ramirez is a longtime educator and writer from San Antonio. SUMMARY:Touch Paper: A Creative Journaling Workshop for Teens
DESCRIPTION:Register to join “Touch Paper” in-person at Gemini Ink\nRegister to join “Touch Paper” online via Zoom\nLooking for a safe space to disconnect from the overstimulating world of social media? \nA place to share your real feelings? Whether you’re an experienced writer or picking up the pen for the very first time\, this workshop is for you! Join us as we touch paper and turn worry into written words. \nIn this free one-day workshop\, teens will focus on using writing as a way to get it all out. We’ll start with an introduction to creative journaling and learn how it can promote positive mental health. Then we’ll put pen to paper and play on the page! All youth writers will have an opportunity to share their writing with an audience. \nWe will offer the same workshop simultaneously–online and in-person. Teens aged 13-19 are encouraged to register for one of the workshops. All participating youth are invited to celebrate their writing in-person with family and friends the following day. Light refreshments will be served. \n *For participants attending in-person at Gemini Ink\, supplies and snacks will be provided. \n*For participants attending online via Zoom\, supply kits will be available for pick up at Gemini Ink prior to the workshop. We will also provide a list of suggested supplies to gather from around the house. \n Youth writers will leave this workshop series with: \n\nAt least one new piece of writing\nWays to use writing for coping and resiliency\nTools & exercises to keep writing at home\n\nSeating is limited\, please register.

Since then\, in addition to his original love of storytelling\, he’s found a penchant for calligraphy\, puppetry\, poetry\, and block printing. A San Antonio native\, he explores the crystalline waters of Central Texas in his free time. \n \n  \n

Your revision process applies the heat. The outcome is one blazing poem. Join former San Antonio and Texas poet Laureate Laurie Ann Guerrero for a workshop where she walks us through her process for refining her poems. \nIn this two-part lecture\, Laurie Ann Guerrero will offer insight into her process of revising and revisioning poems—listening for urgency\, clarifying imagery\, and taking creative risks. Participants will learn her revision sequence and then participants will each workshop one short poem of their own in an atmosphere of generous\, serious attention. Participants are encouraged to bring a poem (no longer than one page) to revise on the spot. \nThis lecture is open to writers of all skill levels 18+. \nIn this lecture\, students will: \n\nLearn revision techniques that re-envision their work\nRevise one piece of their own written work on the spot\nLeave this lecture with revision tools that can be used at home\n\n\nPoet\, essayist\, and visual artist\, Laurie Ann Guerrero was born and raised in the Southside of San Antonio and is the author of REDWORK\, winner of the 2025 Autumn House Poetry Award\, forthcoming in October 2026. Poet Laureate of San Antonio (2014-16) and Texas (2016-2017)\, her award-winning collections\, along with a volume of new & selected poems\, include Babies under the Skin (Panhandler 2008)\, A Tongue in the Mouth of the Dying (University of Notre Dame Press 2013)\, A Crown for Gumecindo (Aztlan Libre Press 2015)\, and I Have Eaten the Rattlesnake: New & Selected Poems (TCU Press 2021). Guerrero holds degrees from Smith College and Drew University. She is an Associate Professor and the Writer-in-Residence at Texas A&M University-San Antonio where she teaches writing\, cultural\, and gender studies. She is currently at work on a novel. \n

After studying History in grad school\, he tromped around the outdoors doing conservation with teenagers. Spending time as a Montessori educator revealed the power of incorporating creativity with learning. Encouraging youth to tap into their creative abilities convinced him to discover his own. Since then\, in addition to his original love of storytelling\, he’s found a penchant for calligraphy\, puppetry\, poetry\, and block printing. A San Antonio native\, he explores the crystalline waters of Central Texas in his free time. \n \n  \n
