In memoir, the reader must be persuaded that the narrator is writing honestly, whether or not he/she is, is secondary. This workshop will consist of a number of exercises which will help to get us started when working on a memoir essay. We’ll talk, we’ll laugh, we’ll cry. We’ll vent. We’ll write from our hearts and minds. And then, we’ll learn to get rid of all the sentimentality and leave on the page what is important for the reader to know about your memoir.

Voice is an uncontested necessity for the liberation of individuals and communities. But how do we reflect and write about difficulties when we may be holding crippling silence? And when we are silenced, what power can be found in choosing to be silent? There is a need for reflection, perseverance and persistence during times of #metoo, Black Lives Matter, and immigration. Participants will generate work and review literature while reconsidering unique ways to find voice.

The Poetic Ode: A Means to Breaking Free

November 8 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Gemini Ink, 1111 Navarro St
San Antonio, 78205 United States
+ Google Map
$135.00

We live in a world in which language is too often driven by social media shares, political rhetoric, and chyrons scrolling across cable news. As poet Adrienne Rich wrote, we live with “manipulated fear, ignorance, cultural confusion and social antagonism huddling together on the faultline of an empire.” This generative poetry workshop will focus on the tradition of the poetic ode—from the ancient Greeks to contemporary American poets—as a means to break free, to write courageously, and to use our poems to effect change in our community and the world.

Revision Strategies for Poets: Looking at Mode in Poems

November 10 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm
Gemini Ink, 1111 Navarro St
San Antonio, 78205 United States
+ Google Map
$100

Identifying mode in poems is a valuable diagnostic and revision method. In this brief lecture followed by a workshop, we’ll define the four modes—lyric, narrative, argument, description—and read examples of each. Then we’ll turn to participants’ poems, first identifying the dominant mode and then asking whether the poem would be better served by a different one. Through this workshop, you can refresh your perspective on the revision process. Please bring copies of two poems that you’re unhappy with, but note that we might not have time for both.
