Microfiction Two: The Sequel

For students who took Tina’s “Go Small or Go Home” microfiction workshop, and for anyone who wants to experience writing microfiction. We’ll look at masters of short-form writing, as well as prose poems and narrative poets, who bring us to the action quickly and hold us there with carefully honed, emotive language and images that resonate. Students will leave with four drafts of stories and plenty of ideas to generate new pieces.   Tina Barry’s writing appears in numerous publications…

Literary Excursions: Critically Acclaimed Contemporary Short Stories

In each session of this class, we will examine two short stories, focusing on what distinguishes them from other examples of the form—the literary style, message, theme, characters or something else? As a group, we will try to determine what aspects contribute to the story’s critical acclaim. Then, we’ll document our reasons for determining whenever a story is overrated! All stories are linked below, and available through online search. June 5: Jhumpa Lahiri’s “A Temporary Matter” – “New Yorker,” 4/30/98…

Gemini Ink Writers Conference: Negotiating Place

(Clockwise from top left) Andrea Vocab Sanderson, Pablo Miguel Martínez, Analicia Sotelo, Camille Acker, Andre Dubus III, and Ira Sukrungruang. As artists, we ask ourselves “where do we do our best work?” As humans, we wonder “where do our words fit into the larger conversation?” As literary citizens, we are called to live in ways that represent ourselves, our languages, our communities, our cultures. For we all know that the idea of ‘place’ and the conversations that surround it continue…

The Geography of the Poem—An Exploration of the Physical Terrain of Contemporary Poetry

Poetry Workshop with Alexandra van de Kamp This two-session class will take a deep dive into how poets sculpt their poems. How are contemporary poets expanding the geography of their poems and reveling in the physical terrain a poem can create. How can line breaks build energy and suspense in your poems? Can playing with syntax nurture a sense of mischief in your writing process? All in all, through close readings and prompts, you’ll walk away with drafts of new…

Entering the Spirit Space: A Writing Workshop Using Medicina Tradicional

Writing is like making a fluffy tortilla, if you aren’t completely present with the process of kneading the masa, the tortilla won’t rise. Join author Anel Flores, and Erika Casasola, Mexican curandera, to enter on a path to more authentic and fulfilling writing practice. More than flipping scene by scene through the writer’s life, their memories, their research, and countless rough drafts, the writing process can also involve exploring memories of childhood, youth, adulthood, or ancestral blood memory. In this workshop, we’ll open up the creative process using the traditional curanderismo (healing) practice of conversation, the “platica.” You’ll come away with a tool bag of ideas for future writing and some suggestions for sharing and submitting your work for publication.   Continue reading

We’ll identify key points integral to story making, such as the conflict, the climax, and the rising action. In doing so, we’ll learn to outline our stories…
