Coming to America

Wednesdays, May 6, 13, & 20, 6:30-8:30pm
Online via Zoom

Non-Member $25; Member $20 per class

Enjoy a dynamic, intellectually rich literary discussion with Dr Bonnie Lyons, beloved UTSA professor emeritus in literature. We’ll discuss a diverse range of three novels depicting the immigrant experience in America in our “Coming to America” series starting May 6th. Students do not need to read each book in its entirety to enjoy the lively literary discussion that Bonnie will provide.

No subject is more central to the current political and moral climate of this country, and to Texas in particular, than immigration. Why immigrants come, what they face, and how they fare here are issues explored in many recent novels. In this class, we will discuss three examples that depict immigration to the USA from China, India, and Haiti. Each discussion-based class will explore one novel, including some lecture, but mostly focus on the conversation.

Wed. May 6, Fae Ng’s Bone
Wed. May 13, Edwidge Danticat’s Breath, Eyes, Memory
Wed. May 20, Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake

All Zoom classes are at a reasonable price with the possibility of taking only one class if desired.
*Once you are registered, we will contact you about further class details.
For questions, or to register for all three classes, contact Josh Cantú at joshua@geminiink.org.
