The Art of the Opening
November 9 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm UTC+5$125
How does one create a compelling opening to a short story or novel? In this course, we’ll examine not only what makes a good opening sentence, but also what makes a good opening paragraph or scene. We’ll move beyond simply “hooking” the reader and explore strategies for quickly connecting readers with characters. Part of the class will be spent exploring these strategies and part will focus on exercises designed to create compelling openings yourself, openings you might one day use in your own fiction.
Andrew Porter is the author of The Theory of Light and Matter (Vintage/Random House), which won the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, and In Between Days (Alfred A.
