Billy Collins answers the question of where we find our voice by stating, “Your voice has an external source. It does not lie within you… It lies on the shelves of the library, and the shelves of the bookstore. Your voice is in the voices of other poets.”

In this workshop, we will explore in-depth how to find our poetic voice. We will discuss the elements of the poetic voice such as speaker, diction, syntax, rhythm, tone and various other characteristics. In addition, we will study ways we can stretch and challenge our use of poetic voice. Finally, we will apply four questions that will reveal our own poetic voice.

*Participants should bring two or three copies of their poems for feedback. This all-level workshop is ideal for poets and students eager to unpack the craft choices that influence how we sound on the page.

Students will leave this workshop with the following tools:

  • An understanding of the elements of poetic voice
  • A four-step process on how to find your authentic voice
