Join us for our monthly book plática. Light drinks and snacks are provided. Feel free to bring your brown bag lunch.

From the New York Times best-selling author of Bad Feminist, a searingly honest memoir of food, weight, self-image, and learning how to feed your hunger while taking care of yourself.

“I ate and ate and ate in the hopes that if I made myself big, my body would be safe. I buried the girl I was because she ran into all kinds of trouble. I tried to erase every memory of her, but she is still there, somewhere. . . . I was trapped in my body, one that I barely recognized or understood, but at least I was safe.”

Instructor: Naomi Shihab Nye

This one-day poetry (or prose!) workshop focuses on what we already have in our vast treasure-houses of material—what we haven’t used yet, what we might restyle as a gift for ourselves or someone else. In the December gift-giving and shopping season, writing itself might be our best gift. What about a poem in honor of someone else? A paragraph to be hand-printed on lovely paper as a treat for anyone you’d like to surprise? You will leave with at least 4-6 different rough drafts. Lots of presents! Open to all. Please read some Padgett poems and pick a few favorites before class.

Class text: Collected Poems by Ron Padgett or, any single volume by Ron Padgett.

The glare of the 1980s changed the noir landscape. A new breed of noir, called neo-noir, went in new directions, incorporating diverse voices and perspectives. These hardboiled authors investigated more than just murder, but interrogated the shadowy social landscapes behind the crime scene itself. The settings expanded from Big City USA to suburban shopping malls and beyond. Join as we explore the classics of Neo-Noir.

Tough, hard-boiled, and brilliantly suspenseful, The Last Good Kiss is an unforgettable detective story starring C. W. Sughrue, a Montana investigator who kills time by working at a topless bar. Hired to track down a derelict author, he ends up on the trail of a girl missing in Haight-Ashbury for a decade. The tense hunt becomes obsessive as Sughrue takes a haunting journey through the underbelly of America's sleaziest nightmares.

Facilitated by Sheila Black.

When it was published in 1995, Mary Karr’s The Liars’ Club took the world by storm and raised the art of the memoir to an entirely new level, as well as bringing about a dramatic revival of the form. Karr’s comic childhood in an east Texas oil town brings us characters as darkly hilarious as any of J. D. Salinger’s—a hard-drinking daddy, a sister who can talk down the sheriff at twelve, and an oft-married mother whose accumulated secrets threaten to destroy them all. Now with a new introduction that discusses her memoir’s impact on her family, this unsentimental and profoundly moving account of an apocalyptic childhood is as “funny, lively, and un-put-downable” (USA Today) today as it ever was.
