Best Summer Poetry Reads for the “Beach”: An August Poetry Boost & Discussion

Whether you’re headed to the beach with its sand and sun or want to learn about new poetic voices from the shores of your couch, join Gemini Ink’s Executive Director Alexandra van de Kamp on an exploration of new or newly-discovered titles and her recommendations on recent “Best Reads” she’s especially savored! We’ll discuss sample poems from a wide range of poetry collections including works by Natalie Diaz, Morgan Parker, Urayoán Noel, Barbara Ras, Donika Kelly, Reginald Gibbons, and more. Poets of all levels are welcome! We’ll closely read some stand-out poems from each poet and mine them for poetic gold and craft points! Students will also receive writing prompts based on the poems discussed so they can begin drafting new work in the class and have poetic fuel for future writing. 
 
Feel free to bring 1-2 poetry books you’ve recently discovered to share with us.  Energize your poetry practice with this end-of-summer boost!

Alexandra van de Kamp is the Executive Director for Gemini Ink and teaches poetry workshops at Gemini Ink and online, through The Poetry Barn. She is the author of two full-length collections of poems: Kiss/Hierarchy (Rain Mountain Press, 2016) and The Park of Upside-Down Chairs (CW Books, 2010). Her next collection, Ricochet Script, is forthcoming from Next Page Press in the spring of 2022. She has also published several chapbooks, including Dear Jean Seberg (2011), which won the 2010 Burnside Review Chapbook Contest. Her poems have been published in journals nationwide, such as The Cincinnati Review, Connecticut Review, 32Poems, Denver Quarterly, The Taos Journal of International Poetry & Art, and Washington Square. Her work has been nominated for five Pushcart Prizes and Best of the Net.
