Part One: Writing the Beautiful and Painful Truth
Work with award-winning poet Edward Vidaurre to dismantle the obstacles that stop your creative process. By welcoming pain and allowing the beauty of the same pain to flow in your writing, you will learn to write without reserve. We will welcome whatever ridiculous ideas and prompts come forth when thinking of what to write and be witnesses to our hearts and minds as we document those feelings and ideas. Students will bring 1-2 current pieces of writing to the class for feedback as well as generate new work.
Part Two: Small Press Publishing Pains and Gains
Following the first week’s generative workshop, we will focus on practical aspects of the poetry publishing process: the importance of editing, research, community, submitting, rejection, and staying focused.
Edward Vidaurre is an award-winning poet and author of eight collections of poetry with Cry, Howl (Prickly Pear Publishing 2021) and Pandemia & Other Poems (Aztlan Libre Press 2020) his most recent books. He is the former 2018-2019 City of McAllen, TX Poet Laureate, publisher & editor-in-chief of FlowerSong Press and its sister imprint Juventud Press, and a five-time Pushcart Prize-nominated poet. Vidaurre is from Boyle Heights, CA and now resides in McAllen, TX with his wife and daughter.
