This workshop is geared toward anyone with roots in the migrante experience or anyone who would like to write about it in new, thought-provoking ways. All levels are welcome, but novice writers who want to unlock the beauty of their own voice are highly encouraged to register.
Trying to get your work published? Overwhelmed with the entire submission process? We are too! This workshop will provide a 360° view of the publication process, from understanding your own writing to finding places to submit your work. Writers will gain familiarity with the ins and outs of the literary journal world and chapbook/manuscript contests while learning practical ways to submit work and track submissions. Participants will walk away feeling confident they can manage the beast that is the submission process.
In this class, we will discuss the process of becoming an observant "recorder” in every sense of the word. We will also discuss how to take these “recordings” that now live in our mind, reimagine them, then translate them into our writing so readers are invited to reimagine them too. We will examine how this movement from the real world to our mind to our work then to our reader’s imagination can be done seamlessly, with an emphasis on word choice and syntax. We will also discuss sentence visualization and the role our senses play in creating a written world as believable as our own “real” world.
Each of us has a writing voice that is distinctly our own. Creative nonfiction is a great way to discover that voice. In this workshop, we will use texts and writing exercises to help us discover who we are, what we think, and how to capture our voice on the page. Writers of all levels are welcome.

In this writing workshop for adults 16+, we will explore short stories, poems and hybrid pieces that help us reimagine realities and unlock the strange, the magical, the grotesque, and the beautiful that we find in our familial stories and our everyday lives.
This workshop deals with finding a song’s “main goal,” its central theme, and then explores the various ways we can “drive home” that story for other listeners to appreciate. We’ll take a look at the inner workings of several song forms and structures so we can better understand how to apply our particular stories to those classic structures.
In this workshop led by American Book Award winner Allison Hedge Coke, we will study musical genres, influences, and elements that will develop our knowledge of structure and momentum so that we can infuse our lines with lyricism, sound, and rhythm from beginning to end.
Through examination of poetry ranging from ancient Greece to the best contemporary pieces, we will study techniques poets use to create erotic imagery with skill and taste.
